"The Visitor" by Maryann Miller

A retelling of the classic Goldilocks and the Three Bears in modern day...

Amanda didn't know why she'd awakened so early. Halfway through a restless night, disturbed frequently by the soft sighing and scraping of the branches of the pine tree rubbing against the roof, she'd vowed to sleep in, but some fragment of unease had broken her vow.

Carrying her mug of coffee, she stepped out on the back porch in time to see pale yellow lasers of light shoot into the gray, dawn sky behind the crest of the mountain ridge. The crisp air helped clear the foggy corners of her mind and she leaned against the porch railing to ponder the anomaly of her restlessness.

In the years that they'd been vacationing in the Rockies, she couldn't remember ever having trouble sleeping, usually falling into a deep, exhausted slumber after a heavy dose of the great outdoors. She couldn't remember being skittish about strange sounds in the night before, either. Most of the critters who shared their little mountain oasis were smart enough to stay out of the house and the nearest human neighbor lived miles away.
