From "The Spaces Between Your Screams" by Christopher Hivner

The Spaces Between Your ScreamsJulie started to pull her eye away from the kaleidoscope, but the patterns inside the tube quickly changed. She blocked out the music and concentrated on the clockwork of her prize. As she turned it again, all the crystals were red. They seemed to melt together instead of meeting and changing. What Julie saw now resembled a blot of blood smeared across the lens of the scope.

The middle of the spot eroded. Something emerged from the stain of color.

Expanding toward Julie like a bubble, it leapt into her vision, screaming. Julie jumped in her chair but kept the scope pressed firmly to her eye. Releasing the confection from her other hand, she pressed both palms firmly against the plastic toy.

Turning it too fast, Julie saw only smears of red, like bloody wounds. Calming herself, she rotated the scope slowly. The shapeless mass formed, pulled apart from the middle, and a face exploded out, mouth open wide in terror.
